On Wednesday night I went to the Women in Technology club workshop where we got tips on all things resume, interview, LinkedIn etc.

I made the decision to go to next week’s career panel to expose myself to the networking experience.

      LinkedIn:

  • Be active, post whenever you can and tag people

  • LinkedIn premium isn’t really necessary

  • If you move up in positions within the same experience/organisation you can link (like physically) don’t keep them separated

    Internship:

  • Look local

  • Cold contact companies, link your LinkedIn, I’m looking for a job these are my skills, etc. can keep the emails to be pretty similar, maybe one or two specific lines about the company

  • (For career panel) make note of the companies 

  • CCEO job board is something Purdue has

  • Reach out on LinkedIn dm Purdue alumni that work at companies 

   Applying Tips:

  • Have a spreadsheet that tracks your progression in the application process

  • Set an applying goal (7 applications a week or something)

  • Consider location 

  • Leverage your network (get people’s info from next week’s career panel)

    Interview Tips:

  • Have a basic understanding of the company and maybe the culture (core values)

  • STAR method (situation, task, action, results) basically the hero’s journey of a quick anecdote of an experience you had

  • ALWAYS ask a question at the end of the interview, shows you paid attention and cared but also there ARE bad questions (good example: what does a day in the life here look like?)

    Resume:

  • “Completed homework assignment to achieve xyz” basically don’t list that you did something without stating the goal for it

    If you’re not doing an internship:

  • Do certificates, online courses, personal projects, summer research, any customer facing role, working at a store related your major (example: Best Buy)

  • Be proactive and get something done related to you so your summer is not wasted
